In 1973 Jim Fosgate, working in his garage in Arizona, found that music and the human ear have different audio properties. The ear does not carry the same sonic curve, which makes low frequencies sound wrong at low volume.
His solution was the Frequency Energizer, which became the patented Punch EQ: a bass boost of up to +18 dB at 45 Hz and a treble hinge filter active from 1 kHz, reaching up to +12 dB at 20 kHz. Fosgate demonstrated the first consumer product, the PR-7000 amplifier, at the 1973 Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago.
That circuit is the reason the company exists, and the sound of the Punch is still in everything it makes. Rockford Fosgate's own line for it is the one we could not have written better ourselves: Loud. Clear. Relentless.
